Custom promotional stickers and decals are some of the cheapest ways to enhance visibility for a brand, a personality, or an association. They come in many shapes and sizes, and are available in black and white, translucent, or full color.

Overcoming Pittakionophobia, Fear of Stickers, With Hypnotherapy

Sticker fear is a powerful phobia that affects many people throughout the world

Like all phobias, it is essentially an anxiety disorder.

Simply put, those with this particular phobia experience varying degrees of anxiety when faced with stickers or sticky labels – whether those stickers are on fruit such as apples, bananas or kiwis, on plastic items, household appliances or on clothing, it makes little difference.

This phobia can make even the most courageous person shiver with fear.

Perhaps the main reason that this particular phobia is so little acknowledged is because individuals suffering from this irrational fear have often developed a sense of abnormality or shame, wrongly believing that only they have this particular issue.

Because of this, those who are afraid of stickers or of sticky labels often feel foolish, becoming reluctant to talk about it to others and so it remains largely hidden.

Indeed, in my clinical practice I have treated only two people for this particular phobia. Both were clients who had been successfully treated for other conditions and who mentioned, almost in passing, that they also suffered from the fear of stickers.

Once uncovered, however, it is a fairly simple procedure to permanently remove the fear and phobia.

The real problem, of course, is that most of those suffering from this debilitating phobia simply do not know that effective treatment is available. Symptoms of a sticker phobia are similar to those of other phobias: increased heart rate, palpitations, dry mouth, shortness of breath and even feelings of dizziness or nausea when exposed to the rationally benign stimulus of stickers or sticky labels.

So hidden is this phobia that currently there appears to be no commonly accepted name for the fear of stickers or of sticky labels. It simply does not currently appear on any phobia list.

However, I have coined a neologism – or new word – for this phobia, based on proper linguistic rules, which I offer here.

The word ‘phobia’ comes from the Greek word meaning ‘fear’ and the rule is that any suffix attached to it should also be of Greek origin. (Though some phobia names contain suffixes derived from Latin, this is linguistically incorrect and has been brought about simply because the doctors who coined the name of the phobia were more familiar with Latin than they were with Greek!)

The value of having a correct name for the irrational fear of stickers and of sticky labels is that those suffering from this phobia may well find real relief in discovering that there is indeed a name for their secret fear and so may feel less abnormal and unique.

Having a correct name for any condition that disturbs us is a major step forward in becoming empowered to seek proper treatment for it.

The name I offer is ‘pittakionophobia’.

Initially, this may seem like a bit of a mouthful, but it really isn’t. It is simply pronounced: pit-ak-ion-ophobia.

‘Pittakion’ is the Greek word for label or ticket (in Latin it’s ‘pittacium’) and so, combined with ‘phobia’ pittakionophobia is the irrational fear of stickers or of labels.

Causes of Pittakionophobia – Fear of Stickers

The actual causes of pittakionophobia almost always lie in the individual’s past.

Because of a previous experience, the person’s subconscious has connected stickers or sticky labels with anxiety and danger.

Most often, this has happened in childhood or in the early years of adolescence, though in some cases it may have occurred later in life.

Such an experience may have happened directly, as a result of a traumatic experience involving a sticker – having one stuck to some part of the body, for example – or even indirectly as a result of another person’s fearful experience that was observed by the person who would then go on to develop the phobia. Treatment of Sticker Phobia

The good news is that real and effective relief is available.

Once this is accomplished, we can simply neutralize the incorrect belief that has been installed in the subconscious that stickers or sticky labels mean danger and that it needs to trigger anxiety.

The simple fact is that you were not born with this phobia and you do not have to continue to live your life around this fear.

Are Bumper Stickers A First Amendment Right?

If you get out and drive around town at all you have surely seen all kinds of different bumper stickers ranging from just a timid “Virginia is for Lovers” to “I hate Bush” and many variations between. We see parents displaying stickers stating they are proud of their child like the “my child is an honor student” ones, and conversely the negative parody, “my kid beat up your honor student”. What you may not know is that many states have statutes prohibiting certain kinds of statements or illustrations. Is this a violation of our rights under the First Amendment? Let’s take a look at what is being said.

The U.S. Supreme Court has stated that “the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable and the fact that protected speech may be offensive to some does not justify its suppression.”

Regardless, there have still been many situations where individuals have been cited for the language or illustrations displayed on their vehicles. One woman in Florida who had the famous four letter word for intercourse stated three times on a sticker was cited but the charges were dropped because the word was not being used in a sexual context.

A man in Georgia displaying the infamous “_ _it happens” statement was fined $100 by a local jurisdiction, he took the case to the Georgia Supreme Court citing that the law was unconstitutional and they sided with him saying, “the peace of society is not endangered by the profane or lewd word which is not directed at a particular audience.” This seems to state that as long as you aren’t directing your remark to a specific group of people that it is okay, at least in Georgia.

Despite the victories by these mentioned above and many others there are a lot of states that have laws similar to the one below:

According to the law in Tennessee, “the display of obscene and patently offensive movies, bumper stickers, window signs, or other markings on or in a motor vehicle which is visible to other drivers is prohibited and display of such materials shall subject the owner of the vehicle on which they are displayed, upon conviction, to a fine of not less than $2.00, nor more than $50.00.” The state defines obscene like this:

“(A) The average person applying contemporary community standards would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;

(B) The average person applying contemporary community standards would find that the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct; and

(C) The work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value

(11) “Patently offensive” means that which goes substantially beyond customary limits of candor in describing or representing such matters.

I have to agree with what the Georgia court concluded their ruling in the case mentioned above, a statement from Benjamin Franklin, “Everything one has a right to do is not best to be done.” So, in plain English, just because we have a right to do it doesn’t mean we should. Use some common sense in what you display on your car.

Our Stanley Cup

15 years ago, as kids, we started a small town road hockey league. Roughly 60 of us in total… we had teams with schedules, general managers, play money, free agency and contracts… the league had it’s own economy. We kept track of stats, made hockey cards and newsletters. Even made our own Stanley Cup, parts paid for with our allowance money. We assembled a tin can, pie-plate, cookie tins, tupperware, pellet container, mixing bowl, and painted it… and every season, battled our way to the finals to win this ultimate prize. Completely kid-organized and self-governed… it was all about hockey, and all about the Stanley Cup. The champions names went on the cup; paper stickers on dull grey paint. When we found out about “Build Stanley”, we knew we had to share our Stanley Cup with the rest of the hockey world. We tore it apart, stripped the paint, cleaned off the rust, particle blasted, primed, base-coated, chrome-coated, sanded, then top-coated everything, and painstakingly airbrushed the names back onto the cup, along with the details of the original bowl. We redrilled each section, and reassembled the cup to perfect alignment. Our 34th Season starts this June.

It’s Tough Being an Active Hero

On my back passenger window I have a sticker from the FOP, Fraternal Order of Police, indicating that I am an active supporter — or, at least I was in 2004. This basically means that someone from the FOP called me while I was watching TV one day and I pledged to donate five dollars in order to get the person off of the phone. If that is not support, I am not sure what is. So, after making my promise, I received a bill in the mail along with the sticker that I was supposed to put on my car so that people who walk by it know that I am a sucker, I mean, supporter. Over the years I have felt a special connection to other cars with FOP stickers, especially stickers from 2004. I don’t like to associate with those 2003 supporters, who are obviously too cheap to update their stickers

Something tells me that I should have kept contributing to the FOP each year in order to get new stickers. I am not sure how long this “supporter” title is supposed to last. However, I am looking forward to getting pulled over by a cop so that I can try out this four-year-old sticker. “Excuse me, I don’t think you want to give me a ticket. You must not have seen that 2004 FOP sticker on my back window,” I will say…

“True, you are a real hero and certainly an active supporter,” the cop will obviously reply. “I am going to rip up this ticket. And while I am here, is there anything I can get you? Like a badge or a gun or an iced coffee?”

“No, no, don’t worry about it,” I will then say. “I can’t be tied down with those things. I need to drive around and show off this sticker. I am, after all, a 2004 active supporter.”

I have this whole conversation planned perfectly. I’ve also been wondering about college alumni stickers. I’ve had my own alma mater — Boston College — planted on my rear window for several years. People assume that I graduated from there, which is fine since I did. But does that mean that I can put 18 stickers on my rear window and people will think that I went to each of those schools? Actually, will 18 stickers make me seem really educated because I went to all those colleges, or really indecisive for the same reason?

In fact, I don’t think colleges even need to give out diplomas anymore — just give out rear window stickers instead. This upcoming Christmas, maybe I will buy people stickers from the colleges of their choice so that they can pretend to go to those schools. I mean, no one — no one — is crazy enough to put a sticker on his or her car from a school that he or she did not graduate from. And if a person does that, then that person deserves to graduate from that school for having the brains to figure out that it is not necessary to spend over $100,000 on a college education — just one dollar on a sticker. But I can not be bogged down with all of this right now. After all, I am a 2004 FOP supporter. I have to save the world and whatnot…

But I digress.
